Introduction
Welcome to the Nelsons Domain rules page for the Brag card games. The rules for these games are designed around a fairly basic set of rules. There are many variations of rules within the Brag game, some varying from Public House to Public House. Within this game there are no wildcards or 'braggers'. In Three Card Brag, three 3's is the highest possible ranking hand The highest run is Ace, King, Queen and the lowest is 3, 2, Ace.
General Rules
When a new hand is dealt, each player enters a stake of £2 into the 'Pot'. The player to the left of the dealer chooses to play or quit first. You can play or quit at any stage of a hand, as long as there are other players. The option to call (see another players cards) is only available when there is two players left, yourself and one other. When you quit the rest of the players will continue the game until a winner is found. If two players hands are identical, the player who calls loses.
Once the main playing screen has been loaded, select the deal button. This will deal three cards to you and your opponents.
Playing Screen Layout
The Scorepanel in the top right corner, (top left of versions earlier than 3.0) denotes how much money each player currently has, the status within the hand currently dealt and a white circle shows who dealt the current hand. The Action Window on the right of the screen will guide you through the actions of each player within the current dealt hand. This is designed to help you follow the progress of each hand. It will tell you when a player quits, plays or raises the stake within a particular hand, or whether a player is playing blind. Each player has three cards. For your opponents these are face down. If there are no cards next to a player then they have folded in this hand. Within the centre of the playing area are the values of the pot that is being played for and the value of the current stake. Near the bottom right of the screen are the game playing buttons. Here you select to deal, play, quit, raise and call.
Once you have studied your three cards decide whether you wish to continue playing or quit from this particular hand. To help decide whether you have a high scoring hand the ranking order is listed below.
Card Combinations
| Ratings Of Cards | |
| Pryle | Three cards of the same value. The highest ranking pryle can vary depending on local rules, in this version the highest ranking pryle in the Three Card Brag game is three 3's and three 7's in the Seven Card Brag game. Both are then followed by three Aces, three Kings etc down to three 2's. |
| Running Flush | Three cards in numerical order all of the same suit. The highest ranking run is Ace, King, Queen and the lowest is 3, 2, Ace. |
| Run | Three cards in numerical order. The highest ranking run is Ace, King, Queen and the lowest is 3, 2, Ace. |
| Flush | Three cards of the same suit. The highest card of the three determines the rank of the hand. An Ace, 4, 2 combination will beat a King, Queen, 10 combination. If the highest cards are equal the second card determines the higher rank and so on. |
| Pair | Two cards of the same numerical value. The highest ranking pair is a pair of Aces down to a pair of 2's. |
| High | No other combination. Rank determined by the highest card, for example Ace high. If both 'high' cards are equal then the second determines rank and so on. |
For a hand to continue two players need to decide to continue for the hand to progress. There will be occasions when you deal that all the other players decide not to play and your only option is to deal again. I know this is annoying, especially if you have a pryle of threes but rules is rules!
If you decide to quit the other players will continue without you and finish the particular hand until a winner is found. They may all quit in which case a new deal is required. If everybody quits and a new deal takes place then each players adds £1 to the value of the current pot being played for. If you decide to play and there are two or more other players who wish to continue you will then get them option to raise the stake currently being played for. If you raise the stake then each time any player wishes to continue they must also put the current stake into the current pot. Once there are only yourself and one other player left you have the option to call your opponent. This will allow you to see what cards they have. To call you have to enter double the current stake into the current pot. If you and your opponent have identical cards then you will lose because you called.
